THE BLACK SHEEP PROJECT

The body of work titled THE BLACK SHEEP, comprises of 30 artworks that are depictions of African icons who played a role in history being a great influence. The inspiring thing about most of these icons is their precepts on resistance, liberation and self-rule.
This body of work is titled THE BLACK SHEEP; a double edged sword-phrase.
It means a member of the group who is uniquely different from the rest, moreover it also means someone who is considered bad and worthless by another group.
Like Joseph in the bible, black sheep also refers to an outstandingly different member of the family or group.
Pertaining to the artworks in THE BLACK SHEEP series, it refers to the perfect imperfections of the iconic characters as we observe what they stood for in their reign. Through the legacy of these Icons, this series stimulates conversations and discussions based on how much of the African history we know. This work is also meant to question the context of history that has been at our disposal subsequently giving us the perceptions that we have on the African icons who are poised as heroes or vice-a-versa.
The reflection of the history through these artworks makes us acknowledge and also embrace the wealth of legacy that has paved a way for the current generation. It is the BLACK SHEEP legacy that has served as a pedestal for the values in today’s generation, socially and constitutionally.
The present day generation may not have relevance to incite radical or revolutionary uprisings in the institutions and industries; but we can benchmark the access that was relayed to us by the BLACK SHEEP.
