Mandlenkosi Mavengere

Mandlenkosi Mavengere b. (1992) in Zimbabwe in Bulawayo (known as city of kings). Mavengere works predominantly in printing and painting. He moved to South Africa after completing his O’level (matric) in Zimbabwe. Thereafter it was in South Africa where he took up art as a career and got enrolled at Artist Proof Studio printmaking course where he completed his 3rd year. Along the printmaking course, his paintings began to be evident as he participated in several shows. 

Between 2013 – 2015 his work has been in exhibitions such as Black Like Us Exhibition (Parkhurst), Love-World Festival of Music and Arts ( Nasrec Arena), featured in 2015 IT-Web Calendar Brainstorm representing IBM, Turbine Art Fair, Absa Gallery and Artist Proof Studio where he had his internship at the gallery. As an intern at Artist Proof Studio He curated an exhibition hosted by Strauss and Co. He was, thereafter recommended for a one-year internship at William Kentridge Studio for the year 2017. 

The mentorship by William Kentridge significantly developed his innovation and storytelling skills from etchings, into sculpturing and prominent linocut banknotes exploring themes consistent with his Migration Concept. 

From the year 2018 his work has been exhibited by MM-Arthouse, The Melrose Gallery, Strauss & Co. (auctions).

Mavengere’s work was exhibited at the 2018 AKAA Art Fair in Paris, 2019 Belgium Art Fair. His work was featured with Christopher Moller gallery at the Cape Town Art Fair his work drew unique attention leading to an article in Germany. More-so the gallery hosted his solo show titled ÓN GOLDEN SOIL in Cape Town. In the last quarter of 2021 Mavengere’s work was in the Travelling Art Gallery Exhibition in Hamburg Germany, He also launched his collaboration with David Tlale fusing their two concepts and making artwork for the garments.

In the Highlight of his year 2021 Mavengere had his Solo Show titled “THE BLACK SHEEP in Johannesburg Killarny Mall hosted by Gallery K.

His story telling developed articulating his unique way of pronouncing social issues across the economic politics of our day reflecting the past.
